LIM - 21

In the last few decades, several radiological methods have been developed that allow the acquisition of images depicting structural and functional anatomical of the human brain with progressively greater accuracy. Studies in this field employ magnetic resonance imaging techniques, as well as methods of nuclear medicine known as positron emission tomography (PET) and single photon computerized tomography (SPECT).
Since the emergence of the above neuroimaging techniques, a large number of research studies have contributed to the understanding of structural and anatomical brain aspects related to the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders. These research studies involve the investigation of the presence of in vivo brain abnormalities in groups of subjects with neuropsychiatric disorders compared to control groups of asymptomatic volunteers paired for demographic variables, with progressively greater sensitivity and anatomical resolution. Several types of mental conditions have been investigated with such methods, including psychosis, dementia, affective and anxiety disorders, among others.
The LIM 21 – Laboratory of Psychiatric Neuroimaging, is part of the Instituto dos Laboratórios de Investigação Médica (LIMs) of the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Sâo Paulo (HC-FMUSP), being directly attached to the Department of Psychiatry of FMUSP. Over several years, this research laboratory has conducted neuroimaging research studies applied to Psychiatry, Neurology and Neuropsychology in projects financed by research funding agencies in Brazil and from abroad, as well as regularly providing research training for post-graduate and undergraduate students.
